About the event
Chabot Space and Science Center is an interactive museum and observatory in Oakland, California, dedicated to inspiring and educating visitors of all ages about space, science, and the wonders of the universe. It offers hands-on exhibits, planetarium shows, and access to large-scale telescopes for an immersive learning experience.
Our field trip will include
NASA Ames Visitor Center in Studio 1: A hands-on exhibition that brings to life the thrilling, challenging, and inspiring process of scientific discovery by showcasing the real stories and people at NASA’s Ames Research Center.
Exploring Exhibit Spaces: Students will have time to explore the entire center’s exhibits across two buildings, including:
- Studio 2: Going the Distance
- Astrolight
- Studio 3: CoLab: Other Worlds
- Touch the Sun
Planetarium Show: Enjoy a captivating show in the new and improved 70-foot dome, transporting audiences on explorations of Earth and beyond.
Live Science Show: Experience a series of exciting science demonstrations performed live by Chabot’s science educators, highlighting concepts in chemistry, physics, and more.
Build a Mars Lander: Students 3rd grade and up will have the opportunity to build a Mars lander in this 60 minute workshop where they will have the opportunity to design their own lander to protect rovers on their mission to Mars. Engineers will be introduced to the challenges of landing scientific instruments on Mars and then dive into the task of creating, testing, and refining a Mars lander to ensure it can withstand the journey and land safely.
Observatory Complex and Redwood Park: Access to the observatory complex featuring three large-scale telescopes with the opportuunity to enjoy nature hikes or lunch in the adjacent Redwood Park.

Important Info
- AGE/GRADE REQUIREMENTS: K-12 This field trip is open to all students but only those in 3rd grade or higher are able to participate in the Mars Lander Workshop
- ALLERGY ALERT: Please let us know right away if your student has a food allergy so we can make any necessary arrangements
- CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: All field trip sales are final. Extensive planning and detailed preparation goes into each of our field trips and we are unable to accept cancellations or transfers. Please ensure you are able to attend the field trip prior to registering.
- CHAPERONE POLICY: A parent chaperone is required to be present with their student on our field trips regardless of student age or grade level. Upon registering you MUST INCLUDE all attending, including any additional parents/chaperones or siblings.
- FOOD/DRINK RESTRICTIONS: Food and drinks must be consumed in the designated areas
- PARKING AND MEETING INSTRUCTIONS: Event meetup details will be sent out a week prior to your trip.
- RELEASE OF LIABILTY: When registering, make sure to read and understand the Release of Liabiliy Policy before submitting your order
